About ZIPmagic Software, Inc.

We make the Windows utility that keeps your data on your own disk, in a form you control, with a way back when something goes wrong.

What we do

ZIPmagic Software, Inc. develops and publishes ZIPmagic, a compression and recovery tool for Microsoft Windows. It combines transparent disk compression, transparent file compression and one-click system rollback in a single small download, with no account, no cloud and no subscription.

We invented transparent, full-disk compression for Windows and hold United States patent 10,911,065 covering the technology. A disk compressed by ZIPmagic stays completely usable: every installed application runs normally and every file remains accessible as if it were never compressed. All you notice is more free space, and in many cases faster disk reads, because less physical data has to be moved off the drive.

Over time we learned that the compressed disk image is also the most useful thing on the machine. It is a snapshot of a working computer, locked down by the operating system and out of reach of the malware and misconfiguration that break everyday PCs. ZIPmagic Rollback turns that snapshot into a one-click return to a healthy state.

What ZIPmagic does

Rollback

One click back to a healthy state

Installed applications, system settings and user files are preserved in the form the disk was last compressed. When a harmful update, a misconfiguration or a malware infection gets in the way, one click returns the device to that state. If the automatic refresh cannot run, every file in the image can still be recovered by hand.

Disk compression

Roughly double the capacity of any Windows disk

Offline compression of the boot disk is built on WIMBoot technology and typically grows a disk to twice its capacity. Online compression builds on NTFS compression, runs on a live system without a reboot and frees around three times the space of the tools built into Windows. Both are multi-threaded and load-balanced, work on hard disks, SSDs and RAID arrays, and can be reversed at any time. Uninstalling the software never breaks Windows or locks you out of your data.

File compression

A traditional archiver that never disappoints

Browse inside more than 100 archive types as ordinary folders in File Explorer. Copy, paste, drag and double-click work as in any other folder. Includes 7-Zip compatible compression, WinZip compatible JPEG and audio compression, and 256-bit AES encryption, so a stolen laptop does not mean stolen data.

How we build it

  • Store local, skip the cloud. What you put on the cloud belongs to the crowd. ZIPmagic never uploads, syncs or phones home with your files. Your data stays on your computer, whether you are a mile up in the sky or a long way from the nearest connection.
  • Safe and reversible.Every operation can be undone. Offline compression can use an undo disk to protect against a power cut mid-process. You can uncompress a disk at any time, and compressed data stays readable even if the trial ends or the software is removed.
  • One click.ZIPmagic detects your CPU cores, whether you are on an SSD, and which files must stay uncompressed for performance or stability. It sets everything up, reboots when it has to, and gets out of the way.
  • One price.A flat, one-time, perpetual licence. No subscription, no tiers that expire. Try it free first.

History

2014

ZIPmagic DoubleSpace and DriveSpace 5.0 ship, the first transparent, full-disk compression products for Windows. Launched under the banner "store local, skip the cloud", after a year of high-profile cloud breaches.

2015

DoubleSpace 2 and DriveSpace 6 fix the space bleed in Microsoft's WIMBoot and the security-model gaps in NTFS compression, and bring multi-threaded compression to Windows 10.

2021

United States patent 10,911,065 is granted for ZIPmagic's transparent disk compression technology.

2023

Work begins on using the compressed disk image as a security feature: a known-good state to return to after ransomware, a bad update or a broken configuration.

2026

ZIPmagic Rollback. Disk compression, file compression and one-click recovery in one tool, for Windows desktops, laptops, tablets and servers.
